Purpleheart winged bowl, approx 4" (100 mm) diameter

I made this over Christmas 1992 as a present for a friend who had asked for a quirky bowl. The pictures show making a softwood chuck to hold the piece while I turned it. I was quite an inexperienced turnert at this point, and it's much easier to make a continuous cut than an interrupted one (with those sharp edges whizzing round unprotected, just waiting for a careless finger. The wood is really, really hard, more like turning aluminium than wood, and I used scrapers for all the work.
