When Dad gave me his lathe there were some small sections of cherry branch he had saved. I think he was given them by a friend who had pruned a tree. I tried one with the bark cleaned off, but it turned out rather small and uninteresting. The next one I turned it until the bark was almost, but not quite removed, which revealed a lot of interesting patterns just under the bark layer, and also let me develop a better shape.
