Small Yew Lidded Pot 5" (125 mm) diameter approx

This was made from a log I inherited from my father, which was actually a tree I had cut down in my uncle's garden in 1987. I gave this pot to him as a 90th birthday present in 2024.

Yew is pretty much characterised by shakes (drying cracks), and it can risk destruction trying to make it too thin, but with this one I struck lucky. There is a nice contrast at the edge between the darker heartwood and the pale sapwood.

In the series of photos it is fairly easy to see how I ended up with a pot. As I was trying to turn a fairly conventional bowl I found I still had a lot of air where I needed wood. As I started clearing away the wood with screw holes from the face plate a nice shape started to emerge, so I went with it. The knob is 1" in diameter, which just happens to be the right size to hold in one of my small chucks, so I was able to finish the underside of the lid quite easily.
