The ash was quite waterlogged when I got it, and this seems to have made the fibres quite weak, so it was very difficult to turn without the end grain tearing out. It was also still damp, and impossible to polish, even though four coats of linseed oil were used. I put it on the shelf and left it for some weeks to dry, when I was able to bring it to a shine with a boiled linseed oil and beeswax mixture. The bowl has warped slightly, which adds to its character, but stands flat on its base.
