This is a piece of wood I found by the side of the road when we stopped the motorhome on the way to Sligo to make a cup of tea. The dark coloration is from mud soaked into the end grain. Pro tip - don't try to turn mud, it really blunts the tools quickly! There is a slight shake (drying crack) in the dark side.
