Chess Set

Made from kauri (agathis, New Zealand Pine) and Honduran walnut. The walnut is like turning chocolate, the kauri is very soft so you need some restraint going between the two types. The king is about 8" (20 cm) tall, and the chess board (mahogany and pine strips from the local DIY store) is 2" (5 cm) squares, so about coffee table size overall. It was a bit of a slog turning all those pawns! I couldn't bring myself to cut the bishops' mitres, so they are plain, and my carving is rubbish so the nights are sort of inspired by the Sutton Hoo helmet, or the greek helm that Britannia (Athene) wears on the old penny coin and older 50p pieces (without a crest, obviously!).
